Abstract

Proceedings of IATL 23

This paper deals with some unsolved problems raised by Tough-constructions in Romance languages. These structures have been a long standing problem in the P&P framework, since they have been assumed to present both A- and A-bar movement properties. Our aim is to contribute to this debate with new data from Romance supporting a raising analysis. We will also show that in Romance infinitivals in TC are reduced structures, which do not case-mark the object. Since arguably the same reduced structures appear in modal non-finite relatives, we will extend our analysis to these constructions.
